Background Knowledge
This lesson will introduce fourth-grade students to the human skeletal system. They will learn about the major bones, their functions, and the importance of the skeletal system in providing structure and support to the body. The lesson will also aim to develop critical thinking and foster a growth mindset.
Skills
Critical Thinking, Growth Mindset
Objectives
Identify the major bones in the human skeletal system
Understand the function of the skeletal system
Develop critical thinking skills through class discussions
Foster a growth mindset by encouraging questions and curiosity

Lesson Activities
Introduction (10 Min)
Begin the lesson with an engaging hook by asking the students a provocative question: 'What would happen if you didn't have any bones?' Allow students a few moments to think and then discuss their ideas. Introduce the concept of the skeletal system by explaining that it is like the framework of a building, providing structure and support to our bodies. Use a summary excerpt to briefly explain the major functions of the skeletal system: support, movement, protection, blood cell production, and mineral storage. Present a short video to visually introduce the major bones in the human body.
Main Lesson (30 Min)
Present new material in structured, manageable chunks. Start with the skull, explaining its function in protecting the brain. Use a context excerpt to provide interesting facts about the skull. Move on to the spine, explaining its role in supporting the body and protecting the spinal cord. Use a worksheet that includes a diagram of the human skeleton for students to label the major bones as you discuss them. Introduce the rib cage, explaining how it protects the heart and lungs. Use task cards with questions about the functions of different bones to encourage students to think critically about the skeletal system. Conclude with the limbs, discussing the bones in the arms and legs and their roles in movement.
Activity (10 Min)
Organize the students into small groups for a cooperative learning activity using the Jigsaw Method. Each group will be assigned a different section of the skeletal system to research using a worksheet. After researching, groups will share their findings with the class, ensuring that all students learn about each part of the skeletal system. Use a rule table to help students organize their findings and present them clearly. Encourage students to ask questions and discuss their observations, fostering a growth mindset and curiosity.
Conclusion (5 Min)
Review the key points of the lesson by playing a quick round of Jeopardy, using questions related to the major bones and their functions. This will serve as a formative assessment to check students' understanding. End the lesson with a reflection activity where students write a one-minute paper about what they found most interesting about the skeletal system and any questions they still have. Collect these papers to gauge students' curiosity and areas that may need further clarification.
