Lesson Activities

Introduction to Comparing Numbers (10 Min)

Begin the lesson with an engaging hook. Ask the students, 'Have you ever wondered how we know if one number is bigger or smaller than another?' Use a real-world example such as comparing the number of apples in two baskets. Introduce the terms 'greater than,' 'less than,' and 'equal to.' Use hand gestures to represent the symbols (>, <, =). Show a short video that visually explains comparing numbers. After the video, read a short story that involves comparing numbers, such as 'Two of Everything' by Lily Toy Hong.

Direct Instruction and Demonstration (20 Min)

Present new material by using a large number line displayed on the board. Show how to compare two numbers by locating them on the number line and determining which is greater or less. Use physical manipulatives like number cards and place them on the number line. Demonstrate using the greater than (>), less than (<), and equal to (=) symbols with the number cards. Provide students with a worksheet where they can practice placing numbers on a number line and using the symbols to compare them. Use task cards with pairs of numbers for students to compare using the symbols.

Guided Practice (15 Min)

Divide the students into pairs for a Think-Pair-Share activity. Provide each pair with a set of number cards and a set of comparison symbols. Ask them to work together to compare the numbers using the symbols. After they have completed a few comparisons, have them share their results with another pair. Circulate the room to provide immediate feedback and support. Afterward, use a Jeopardy-style game where students can answer comparison questions to reinforce learning.

Independent Practice (10 Min)

Give students a worksheet with a variety of number comparison problems. Encourage them to use the number line and manipulatives if needed. Provide a context excerpt with a simple story problem that involves comparing numbers, such as comparing the number of toys two children have. Allow students to solve the problems independently and write their answers. Provide another resource such as a set of question cards for students who finish early to continue practicing comparisons.

Assessment and Reflection (10 Min)

Conduct a quick formative assessment by asking students to hold up cards with the correct symbol (>, <, =) as you call out pairs of numbers. Use a worksheet for a more formal assessment where students compare numbers and use the correct symbols. End the lesson with a reflection activity where students can draw a picture or write a sentence about what they learned. Encourage them to share their reflections with the class.
